First off, I’ll let you know that I’m a bit of a computer tech geek. I love building computers, salvaging parts, and modding. Usually this comes in the territory of using Windows as your base operating system, even though I prefer the Mac OSx. So, when I saw that this company Psystar was offering to custom build a Mac OSx clone system for around $400 (equivalent to the Mac Mini in specs) I was pretty excited. That is, until I found out that the site is gone and they’ve pretty much been given the boot – a cease and desist order given from Apple.
At least that’s the speculation right now, but I wouldn’t doubt that Apple doesn’t take too kindly to people cloning their systems and selling them for a much better price. Although my modding dreams of an Apple system have been slightly crushed for the moment, I still intend to build my own custom Mac system one of these days…
Boo on Apple for the time being.
The Psystar article was originally found on Engadget, you can view it here.

Bum wrap Brian. Building my own macintosh is something i’m mildly interested in but you’ve got to pay your dues when you’re using someone else’s technology for profit. There’s something kind of retarded about my set-up as it is. Hooking a laptop up to a 24″ cinema display so it doubles as a desktop harddrvie is taxing on my hands and neck. I’m tired of craning my head in search of an audio plug or keyboard USB every time i take my macbook to my desk. I’d rather just move around freely but then it’s a little harder to design with a mere 13.5″ of space…

I agree with you Andrew, I don’t think it’s right to use someone else’s technology for profit (in terms of duplicating hardware components) but my main beef is that in order to use the Apple Mac OSx operating system, you have to buy all Apple parts and technology to run it on – and those are near impossible to get your hands on, at least to build an up-to-date system. I would gladly buy the Mac OSx operating system if I could install it clean on a system I built myself, using the parts that I want to build it – just like you can with any Windows based system. Apple is pretty much forcing you to buy their systems using their parts (which are all over-priced) with very little customization.
