Rolling Stone Logo

MyFonts April issue of Creative Characters features typographer Jim Parkinson, who designed (among other things), the logo for Rolling Stones Magazine. The profile touches on at least a dozen other successful typefaces all originally produced for magazines or other clients which are now commercially available to download.

I’m not sure how many of you (does anyone read this?) listen to This American Life on WBEZ Chicago Public Radio. I’ve been an avid follower for almost 4 years now and if there’s one thing i don’t think i’ll ever tire of, it’s hearing Ira Glass’s voice. TAL has done 3 live tours around the U.S. since it’s inception in 1995 pulling from it’s long roster of writers to compose stories and narratives for each of it’s shows.

This time Ira is bringing the show to movie theaters in a live format to be broadcast all over the United States. Anyone interested should watch this:

Tickets go on sale here. The show airs May 1st (i’m pretty sure i’ll be attending) so if you’re interested, hurry up!

The Die Line

I just discovered ‘The Die Line‘— a super charged blog that features a tasty look at package design. They just ran a feature on japanese food packaging… all of it very playful and color driven. It’s fantastic and nothing i wouldn’t expect to emerge from the japanese. I visit japanese markets a lot and the one thing i’ve noticed is the kind of care that goes into wrapping each piece of food or beverage.

Even household products like cleaning supplies and solvents get the royal treatment, a BIG change from the way we brand our food in America. Has anyone even bothered to look at the slow decent of Smart Start Cereal from clean and polished typography too… utter rubbish? (Read THIS! and tell me you don’t see a difference) I’m telling you, if this trend continues we’re all doomed.

Divine Comedy

Fresh new book cover designs for Dante’s Divine Comedy.
Designer Nicole Peterson says:

“I wanted to create a set of book covers that did not use images from the Bosch Hell painting, or any images of Dante and Virgil that are normally found on covers for the Divine Comedy.

I was inspired by Dante’s use of mathematics and architecture in describing Hell, Heaven and Purgatory. I employed simple geometric shapes and color to represent these places, while still keeping the design simple, and allowing the reader to use their imagination when reading these vivid poems.”

Closes-ups here, here, and here.

Troxler Art

I’m a die-hard fan when it comes to poster design. Searching for different color pallets today, i ran across Nikalas Troxler, a swiss poster designer that i’d heard of before. It’s been a while since i’ve been back to visit his work but god is he great. He’s fast becoming one of my favorite designers because he deals in a medium that most people would consider a dying art. Personally, i think this statement is wrong but that’s just me:

2001-Kenny Wheeler

2000-Eskelin-Bennink

1991-James Blood Ulmer

2000-Typhoid Mary

2000-Typhoid Mary
1978-Don Pullen Quartet — My favorite!

More of Troxler’s incredible body of work can be seen here. Be sure to hit the “shuffle” button a lot.
